In 1975, Joaquim Fabregat, a skilled craftsman in compass and navigation instrument repair, laid the foundation for Autonautic Instrumental S.L. in a modest workshop in Barcelona. Driven by a passion for precision and durability, Joaquim manufactured Autonautic’s first magnetic compasses, marine clocks, and weather instruments. Even in its early days, Autonautic stood out for creating robust instruments capable of withstanding the harshest marine conditions. In fact, many of these original products continue to perform in the field today, a testament to the enduring quality that has defined the company since its inception.
By 2004, with Marc Fabregat—Joaquim’s son—taking over management, Autonautic entered a new phase. Marc’s leadership expanded the company’s vision, steering it toward the global market. Autonautic’s reputation crossed borders, and today, over 80% of its products are exported, reaching clients in more than 45 countries. As demand for Autonautic’s reliable instruments grew, so did its product line, now offering an extensive range that includes magnetic compasses, marine clocks, barometers, clinometers, thermometers, and hygrometers.
Situated in El Masnou, a coastal town near Barcelona steeped in maritime tradition, Autonautic continues to uphold its commitment to quality. Every instrument is assembled, adjusted, and meticulously tested on-site by a skilled team. The company’s dedication to excellence is constant, with ongoing assessments ensuring every product meets or exceeds the rigorous standards of professional navigators worldwide.
Today, Autonautic Instrumental stands as the world’s leading authority in magnetic compass manufacturing and service. Unique in the industry, Autonautic not only designs and produces its own line of compasses but also repairs other brands—having serviced over 5,500 compasses to date. The company provides on-site and remote compass adjustments globally, thanks to its team of qualified adjusters.
Reflecting on 50 years, Autonautic has sold more than 70,000 compasses and 45,000 instruments and clocks. This milestone marks half a century of supporting the global maritime community, providing high-quality, cost-effective navigation equipment built to last.
